When troubled war veteran Jerry Burton and his sister Joanna relocate to the quiet little village of Lymstock they are expecting nothing more than country sleepiness and tedium. Miss Jane Marple is asked to help Gwenda, a wealthy young woman who has bought a house on the English coast, only to experience disturbing visions. at Little Paddocks by an advert in the local newspaper and, as promised one of their number is shot. The residents of Chipping Cleghorn are gathered to see a murder on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Miss Marple investigates the wealthy Crackenthorpe clan, believing a body to be hidden on their estate after a visiting friend witnesses a brutal strangling murder occurring on a passing train. So, when he is found dead in the vicarage study, there is no end of suspects. All resent his superior and demanding attitude. The girl is traced to a seaside resort and the desperate family of a wealthy old man.A young woman's corpse is dumped in the library of Gossington Hall, home of Jane Marple's friend Dolly Bantry and her husband Arthur.Ĭolonel Lucius Protheroe is probably the least-liked individual in St Mary Mead. Miss Marple helps her neighbours the Bantrys when a lovely young girl is found dead in their library. The Body in the Library was repeated on BBC Four in September and October 2013. As someone notes about the case, "you'll have to admit it has all the bizarre elements of a cheap thriller." Once hooked, you won't be able to turn it off.
And the supporting cast is admirable, particularly Gwen Watford as Dolly and David Horovitch as Inspector Slack. Miss Hickson is lovely, neither as awesome as Miss Rutherford nor as overly cute as Helen Hayes. The characters are nicely realized and the suspense holds.
This BBC/Arts & Entertainment co-production offers an especially good example of Agatha Christie in adaptation.
